Florida Advance on Marijuana Legalization: What It Means for Our Community

On November 18, 2025, an important move was made toward the legalization of adult-use cannabis in Florida. State election officials announced that the ballot initiative backed by Smart & Safe Florida has been formally advanced to the next step of review—following a lawsuit over delays by the state.

What happened

The initiative had reportedly collected over 660,000 verified petitions, more than three times the minimum required to move forward. The next procedural step is for the initiative to be submitted to the state Attorney General, and then to the state Supreme Court for constitutional review.

However, organizers say the process was delayed:

• They claim officials did not timely send the acknowledgment letter required to trigger the next phase.

• At issue was an order from the Secretary of State to discard hundreds of thousands of signatures because organizers had allegedly failed to provide the full amendment language by mail.

• A lawsuit was filed by Smart & Safe accusing the governor’s administration of road-blocking the initiative.

• After the letter was finally issued, the state asked the court to dismiss the case, since the requested relief had been granted.

Why it matters
