The Rotation: Tony Claude Talks Affordability, Cannabis Reform, and Protecting Florida's Future

Tony Claude Joins The Rotation to Discuss Cannabis Reform, Affordability, and Florida's Future

On the latest episode of The Rotation with Suncoast NORML, the conversation turned from cannabis policy to the broader challenges facing Florida families as Democratic candidate Tony Claude joined the show for an in-depth discussion on affordability, environmental protection, education, and government overreach.

Hosted by Gary Stein, Chris Cano, and Carla Fantastic, the episode explored how many of the issues affecting cannabis consumers are tied to larger political and economic challenges that impact every Floridian.

A Campaign Focused on Affordability

Claude, a U.S. Air Force veteran and former corporate analyst, is running for Florida House District 53, representing parts of Hernando and Pasco Counties. Throughout the interview, he emphasized that affordability is the issue he hears about most from voters.

According to Claude, rising costs for housing, groceries, fuel, and everyday necessities are putting enormous pressure on working families. He argued that state government should focus less on culture-war legislation and more on policies that directly help Floridians make ends meet.

One proposal he highlighted was expanding Florida's tax-holiday programs beyond back-to-school shopping. Claude suggested creating recurring tax holidays for essentials such as food, fuel, and general household goods to provide immediate relief to consumers.

Florida's Water Crisis and Runaway Development

A major portion of the discussion centered on environmental issues facing Florida's Nature Coast.

Claude warned that unchecked development, increasing water consumption, and poor infrastructure planning are threatening some of Florida's most valuable natural resources. He specifically discussed concerns about excessive groundwater usage, fertilizer runoff, and the strain new developments place on local ecosystems.

The conversation also touched on proposed data center projects, which can consume massive amounts of water and electricity. Claude praised local efforts to temporarily pause certain projects while officials study their environmental impact.

One solution he advocated for was encouraging homeowners to replace traditional turf grass with native Florida ground cover. Such landscaping requires significantly less irrigation and fertilizer while helping preserve local water supplies.

The hosts connected these concerns to broader statewide trends, noting that Florida continues to lose natural land at an alarming rate due to rapid growth and development.

Medical Cannabis and Workplace Protections

As expected on a Suncoast NORML podcast, cannabis policy played a central role in the discussion.

Claude revealed that he is a Florida medical cannabis patient himself, using medical marijuana to help manage service-connected health issues stemming from his military service.

When asked about workplace protections for medical cannabis patients, Claude voiced strong support for legislation that would prevent qualified patients from being punished solely because they test positive for cannabis metabolites.

The conversation highlighted a growing issue across the country: patients who legally use cannabis can still lose jobs despite not being impaired at work. The hosts pointed to recent reforms in Maine, where lawmakers enacted protections preventing discrimination against registered medical cannabis patients.

Claude expressed support for similar legislation in Florida and also stated that he favors adult-use legalization.

Revisiting Amendment 3

The panel also discussed the defeat of Florida's adult-use cannabis initiative in 2024.

Claude criticized the political effort that helped defeat the measure and suggested that Floridians should have another opportunity to vote on legalization in the future. The hosts echoed concerns that elected officials continue to interfere with policies that enjoy broad public support.

The discussion served as a reminder that while Florida has a medical cannabis program, significant reforms remain necessary, including workplace protections, parental rights protections, and broader access for patients.

Education, Schools, and Property Taxes

Another major topic was Governor Ron DeSantis' proposal to eliminate property taxes.

Claude argued that removing property taxes without a realistic replacement funding source could have severe consequences for public schools and local services. He warned that local governments would likely seek new forms of taxation while schools could face additional financial pressure.

The hosts discussed school closures, teacher pay concerns, and the growing influence of voucher programs on public education budgets.

Throughout the conversation, Claude repeatedly returned to the idea that government should focus on practical solutions rather than divisive political battles.

NORML News: Signs of Progress

The second half of the episode featured the weekly NORML News segment.

Among the developments discussed:

  • Federal marijuana trafficking prosecutions have dropped dramatically since states began legalizing cannabis.

  • Research continues to debunk claims that fentanyl contamination is widespread in cannabis.

  • Alabama patients finally gained access to medical cannabis products after years of delays.

  • Maine enacted workplace protections for medical cannabis patients.

  • Iowa expanded access to low-THC medical cannabis products, though the program remains highly restrictive.

  • Concerns were raised about proposed tax increases on medical cannabis patients in Washington, D.C.

The segment reinforced a message that has become increasingly clear: cannabis reform continues to move forward across the country, even as many states struggle to modernize outdated policies.

Looking Ahead

The conversation with Tony Claude highlighted an important reality for cannabis advocates: many of the same lawmakers making decisions about marijuana policy are also shaping Florida's approach to housing, healthcare, education, infrastructure, and environmental protection.

Whether discussing workplace rights for medical cannabis patients, preserving Florida's water resources, or helping families afford basic necessities, the episode emphasized the need for leaders willing to focus on practical solutions rather than political distractions.

As election season heats up, Suncoast NORML's "Better Know a Candidate" series continues giving voters an opportunity to hear directly from candidates about the issues that matter most.
